Hello,

The District Three Block Watch Council is conducting a survey of Block Watch
captains and organizers throughout the whole City of Milwaukee, to determine
which "communication/technology tools" are most used by Block Watch program
participants and which of these they find most useful.
All your specific answers are confidential and the final tabulated results
of the Communication Tool Survey will help us identify how to better utilize
these tools.  Additionally, the final tabulated results of this survey will
be provided to all City Wide Block Watch Council District Representatives,
to all Block Watch captains and participants who answer the Communication
Tool Survey questions, and anyone else who does request the final, tabulated
statistical results of this survey.

Once you have completed the survey questions below, please email your
answers to Bently Turner, the District 3 Block Watch Sector 340
Representative at bturner0606@sbcglobal.net

We will be concluding the data collection portion of this survey on January
31, 2012, so please send your responses to the survey prior to that date.

Sincerely,
David B. Wahl

Representative for Police District 3

Got Guns?

With the new open carry law comes new scenarios. Some individuals in the field expect car break-ins to rise with some of our criminal element hoping to find a forgotten pistol in the glove compartment. Guns and alcohol are never a good mix. Law enforcement will be out in droves not only getting drunk drivers off the rode but also the overindulging cowboys firing off celebratory gunshots. Read below and have a safe New Years.

Milwaukee Police Department to Enforce Reduction of Celebratory Gunfire During Holidays by Using ShotSpotter Gunfire Data and Alerts

Celebratory gunfire remains a problem in many cities, particularly during the holiday season, and sadly, it can often have tragic results when innocent people are hit by the bullets and injured or killed. The reality is that any bullet discharged from a gun, even into the sky, must land at some location, and the risks are significant for injury or death.

The Milwaukee Police Department and the City of Milwaukee is committed to its policy of zero tolerance of illegal gun use and its initiative to combat gun violence in our communities. Enabling safety, security and the environment to have quality of life and vitality in our communities is our mission and commitment.

During this holiday season, and particularly on New Year's Eve, the Milwaukee Police Department will be deploying patrol officers in specific areas of the city that have the highest amount of gunshot and firework activity recorded by the ShotSpotter gunfire alert and analysis solution in recent months and last New Year's Eve. Officers will respond to all ShotSpotter activations in these areas and arrest anyone caught discharging a firearm in public. As normal, officers will also be deployed throughout the city to maintain the peace, prevent crime and violence, and arrest drunk drivers.

The Milwaukee Police Department utilizes the ShotSpotter gunfire alert and analysis solution to detect and locate gunfire incidents and gather gunfire intelligence and data to fight crime and violence in Milwaukee. The solution provides real-time and immediate gunshot location data, enabling informed decisions for faster and more accurate emergency response, while improving situational intelligence and increasing first responder safety. The ShotSpotter gunfire alert data and intelligence also provides Milwaukee Police Department with more forensic evidence leading to more thorough investigations and increased prosecutions for gun-related crime, in addition to enhancing crime analysis and data-driven policing capabilities, helping improve public safety and security.

This report, which is based upon information from law enforcement and complaints submitted to the IC3, details recent cyber crime trends, new twists to previously-existing cyber scams, and announcements.

Popular Passwords

An Internet site who manages passwords recently posted an article pertaining to the lack of secure passwords being utilized which may be a factor in data breaches — past, present, and future. One reason for the lack of security is the amount of passwords a user is required to remember to access the many databases, applications, multiple networks, etc., used on a daily basis. Sharing passwords among users in a workplace is becoming a common theme to continue the flow of operations. Users have prioritized convenience over security when establishing passwords.

The article provided a list of millions of stolen passwords posted on-line by hackers and ranked the top 25 common passwords.

All -

Attached to this email are several photos showing the side of squad where the injured officer was located when he was struck last night.

The officer remains in critical condition this morning. He is 37 years old with 5 years of service. His family has requested that media not attempt to contact them at this time. If there is a desire for them to speak with media, I will coordinate that effort.

We continue to ask for the media and the community's help to keep running the description of the suspect vehicle and most important, the number for people to call with information - 414-935-7360.

Below is the original media release to ensure you all have the accurate information. Our No. 1 priority right now is to ensure that the description and tip line are being shared with as wide an audience as possible.

Thank you.

A Milwaukee Police Officer was critically injured on Christmas night when he was struck outside of his squad by a driver who fled the scene.

The incident occurred at 5:17 p.m. at 17th & Windlake when a vehicle driving toward the marked squad on the wrong side of the road jumped the curb and struck the uniformed officer who was attempting to get out of the way.

The officer is currently in critical condition at a local hospital. He is assigned to District 2. We are still working on family notifications so no further information is available at this time.

Milwaukee Police are seeking a dark colored mid-sized sedan, missing the passenger side mirror, with probable front end damage. Anyone with information is asked to call 414-935-7360.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer and his family at this difficult time, and we are appealing to the public to give us any information about this vehicle," said Milwaukee Police Chief Edward A. Flynn.

Please, pass it on

Thank you,

Gracias,

Beware you might not be as protected as you think. Please read.

Below these comments is part of an Email just received.
During a recent rash of break-ins on East Wilbur, more than one neighbor noticed that the light bulbs on their security lights had been unscrewed just enough to cause them not to go on when they where supposed to. If your lights are located low enough to be tampered with you might want to check on them to make sure they will do the job they were intended to do. Easy access to you is also easy access to a thief.

Part of Email sent to me

Re: Break-ins on Wilbur Avenue

Some neighbors on Wilbur and Warnimont reported that their outside light sensor flood lights had been loosened from the sockets so that they wouldn't go on at dusk. Please check your floodlights periodically to be sure they are securely tightened. If you see anyone fiddling with floodlights during the day who isn't the homeowner, call the nonemergency police number and the homeowner. This might be a way of them "marking" their next target and prepping for an evening break-in.

WINTER PARKING RULES
RETURN DEC. 1 - FEB 28

Many Near South Side streets that allow night parking on both sides of the street, return to alternate side parking beginning tonight, December 1st.  If your block does not have the "4 inch" rule, or a specific sign designating prohibited parking, then alternate side parking is back in effect.  Save your money, and make sure your vehicle is on the proper side of the street beginning December 1!

In addition, many major streets throughout the City of Milwaukee still prohibit parking on either side of the street from 2 AM - 6AM starting Dec 1 thru Feb 28,
streets like S 13th St, S 35th St, W National Av, W Greenfield Av, W Lincoln Av, and W Mitchell St.  To find winter night parking rules for your block, click on the following link: Winter Parking rules by block

Two weeks ago residents won the right to park on S. 6th, S. 11th and S 16th, streets where winter parking was previously prohibited.  See map below for details.

As we have done for several years now, we have flyers in English and Spanish that explain how to avoid parking tickets and facilitate snow removal on your block this winter whatever your parking rules may be. Call us at 672-8090 if you'd like some to distribute!
