Flynn; First Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Haanstad; Assistant District Attorney Sara Lewis; Mary Jo Joyce, President, Practical Strategies, Inc. - Wisconsin Rescue and Restore Coalition WHERE: UMOS, 2701 S. Chase Ave., Milwaukee DETAILS: January 11 is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day and Milwaukee Police Chief Edward A. Flynn, together with MPD's state and federal partners, will announce the first prosecution of an offender for Human Trafficking at the state level in Wisconsin. Milwaukee Police Sensitive Crimes Detectives worked with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office to bring the case to court and on January 7, 2011, a jury found Jermaine Rogers guilty of 11 felonies related to human trafficking. This case highlights the need to combat human trafficking on our streets. Rogers, a pimp, used economic and emotional manipulation and violence to enforce his rules and to ensure loyalty through fear of retaliation and humiliation. This successful prosecution is welcome news to victim advocates who work tirelessly to protect these young women. At this event, Chief Flynn will speak about MPD's efforts to combat this crime. The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office will speak to their work on the issue at the local level, and the U.S. Attorney's Office will provide the national perspective. Through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Practical Strategies, Inc. manages the Wisconsin Rescue and Restore Coalition, a program to combat human trafficking, and subcontracts with UMOS and other Wisconsin agencies. UMOS outreach workers provide education and workshops on human trafficking with the goal of creating community awareness. Those workers reach out to potential victims of human trafficking and assist them to safely leave their current circumstances and become self-sufficient.
